There are several types of wet rot. Wet rot is a general term for wood destroying fungi. The two main common types of wet rot are:

• Cellar Fungus (Coniophora puteana).
• Mine Fungus (Fibroporia vaillantii).

Wet rot causes defects in timber such as distortion, cracking, discolouration, softness and the loss of structural strength. It may give off a damp musty smell and can sometimes become visible as a fungal growth.

Wet rot is usually caused by a defect in a building such as rising damp, penetrating damp, a leaking roof or some other form of moisture ingress.

Wet rot requires a moisture content of 50% – 60%.

Wet Rot Treatment

To eradicate wet rot, the source of moisture needs to be removed or reduced to less than 20%. Affected timbers should be removed and replaced with new treated timbers and any adjacent timbers at risk should also be treated.
